Bio

Bernadette has worked with adults with learning disabilities in a variety of roles and locations since 1986. She completed her BSc (Hons) in speech and language therapy at Birmingham City University, via the part-time route, while working as a speech and language therapy assistant in a Community Learning Disability Team in Manchester. Bernadette also holds an MSc in Psychology and Learning Disability from the University of Portsmouth. She currently works with adults with learning disabilities in the community and within an adult men’s prison.

Bernadette’s first role in the prison setting was to complete a scoping exercise to identify the needs that our profession can help with. This has led to permanent provision within the prison.

Bernadette is keen to offer others the opportunity to experience the SLT role within the prison environment. She will always highlight that our job is to work with people – not diagnoses or syndromes, and not crimes or criminal acts – but people.
