Supporting LGBTQIA+ members

28 June 2023

In Pride Month, here’s an update on some of the work happening to support LGBTQIA+ members including how to join us at Leeds Pride in August

Following the success of Pride London last year, in partnership with the SLT Pride Network, we plan to attend the Leeds parade on 6 August 2023.  Participating in Leeds Pride is an opportunity for celebration and joy, as well as an important platform to voice the inequalities that still exist for the LGBTQIA+ community.

As places are limited, we ask applicants to keep in mind that we will be prioritising members of the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as members who work with LGBTQIA+ service users. We especially encourage LGBTQIA+ people of colour and those with a disability to sign up. The RCSLT is happy to support any specific access needs and there is space in the application form to let us know of any access requirements.

If you are an ally, we ask you to consider the space you are taking up – this may mean asking yourself, ‘Shall I take up space as an ally at this event, or can I show support for LGBTQIA+ communities in another way?’.

To sign up to join please complete our online form by Friday 21 July 2023.

If you are taking part in any other Pride events across the UK throughout the Summer, please do tag us and the SLT Pride Network on social media. @RCSLT and @uksltpride.

At the same time, the joint RCSLT and the UK SLT Pride Network LGBTQIA+ working group have been busy working on some resources to support members in three key areas:

  • Supporting colleagues in the workplace
  • Supporting students
  • Supporting allies

They are also working on an audit tool and will be looking for teams to help pilot this later in the year.

The working group have produced this handy graphic summarising progress to-date.
