RCSLT’s vision for Equity, Diversity and Belonging

20 March 2025

The RCSLT’s new equity, diversity and belonging (EDB) vision and strategy sets out our priorities for creating an environment where all practitioners and communities feel a profound sense of belonging and where equitable care is accessible to all.

At the RCSLT, our vision is to create a profession where diversity is celebrated, not only in the people we serve but in the professionals themselves. We are committed to fostering an environment that challenges inequality, champions diversity, and promotes inclusion at every level. This will include and work in tandem with people with lived experience of speech, language, communication and swallowing barriers.

Throughout the vision we have set out what this means for us and how we aim to take this forward as an organisation. Our strategy includes five priority areas underpinned by a number of aspirations that will drive the work we do in each area. These priorities are:

  • Championing diversity and fostering belonging
  • Equitable focus on all diversity groups – taking an intersectional approach
  • Affirming diverse perspectives
  • Advocate for change
  • An accountable and transparent professional body and employer

An action plan is also being developed to deliver these priorities and aspirations, enabling us to achieve our vision to build a profession where every voice is valued, every identity respected, and every practitioner empowered to thrive. The full action plan will be published on our website in the coming months.

Alongside the new vision, we have also refreshed our website to consolidate and make it easier to find relevant resources and information to support SLTs to learn about different people’s lived experiences. Existing resources include recent LGBTQIA+ guidance, guidance for and to support neurodivergent SLTs and guidance to support SLTs with disabilities in the workplace amongst others. We will continue to add resources and information to this section as part of our EDB work.

Equity, diversity, and belonging are shared responsibilities, and we are committed to building a future where these principles are embedded in every aspect of our profession, reflecting the rich diversity of society. We invite all members, partners, and stakeholders to join us in advancing this work.
