Bulletin magazine: equal, diverse and inclusive

30 September 2024

Stay informed with what’s going on in the speech and language therapy profession with RCSLT’s member magazine. This autumn, Bulletin focuses on equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

Earlier this year, we identified the need to redefine our journey in equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) as an organisation and for the speech and language therapy profession. Our profession does not yet fully reflect the diversity of the society we serve. even though it may involve uncomfortable conversations, becoming an equitable profession requires active curiosity and commitment to embedding EDI in everything we do.

The new issue of Bulletin reflects on how integral EDI is to the profession. Our cover story looks at Lewisham’s Community Children’s Specialist Services team and their journey integrating EDI into everyday practice. The multidisciplinary team (MDT) created a safe space for discussion to address diversity and inclusion. They champion being “colour brave,” actively celebrating racial and cultural diversity while confronting challenging conversations about race. They lay out some examples for SLTs looking to implement this work in their own team, such as including an EDI objective in staff performance development reviews, taking new joiners on a culture walk around the borough, and much more.

Other articles explore the need for more male representation in the profession, the potential uses for smart speakers and collaborations in Northern Ireland on a new autism competency framework. You can also read about using AI, and how SLTs see the risks and benefits.
