Current students share what becoming a speech and language therapist (SLT) involves and why they chose to pursue a career in speech and language therapy.
Our new video outlining what to expect from a career in speech and language therapy has been designed by students on RCSLT’s leadership placement.
This video includes student SLTs sharing:
- their reasons for choosing to study to become an SLT
- their personal challenges and support received on their journey to becoming an SLT
- their experiences of diversity and inclusion within the speech and language therapy profession
- tips and inspiring messages to future student and apprentice SLTs.
Student leadership placement
In summer 2023, four student SLTs took part in our pilot student leadership placement. The two-week placement enabled students to gain an underpinning of leadership theory, develop influencing skills and shadow the strategic work of the RCSLT. During the placement they worked collaboratively to scope and design content, including gathering insights from peers, that will inspire people to find out more about becoming a speech and language therapist.
Many thanks to our 2023 leadership placement cohort: Emma Howorth, Esther van Hoeve, Holly Himbury and Sara Kurki.
With the pilot leadership placement proving highly successful, the RCSLT is scoping the options for further rounds. More information will be shared soon.
