Awake craniotomy consultation now open

9 April 2025

Upcoming guidance on the SLT role in awake craniotomies will be the first time the RCSLT has issued advice in this growing field

The RCSLT has been creating new guidance to provide support to the SLTs who are currently working in, or may in future, be working as part of multi-disciplinary teams for awake craniotomy surgery. We will also be publishing information for the general public, to help increase understanding and raise awareness of the role which SLTs play in these surgeries.

SLTs have a vital role in supporting neurosurgeons performing surgery to minimise the negative effects on language centres of the brain. SLTs work with service users before, during and after surgery to support their journey.

Our draft position paper explores the role of the SLT and practice recommendations around awake craniotomy and was co-produced with service users with lived experience of the surgery.

Our draft public information and draft position paper are now available to review, and we are keen to receive your feedback before the information is finalised and published later this year.

The consultation will run from 9 April 2025 until 9 May 2025
